A mother gave birth in a public toilet in Nanjing, Jiangsu province on Monday morning but the baby is missing, Modern Express reported on Tuesday.

The mother used the toilet on her way to hospital with her husband on Monday, the paper said.

The baby was delivered but fell into the sewer pipe which connected a 2-meter deep septic tank.

A rescue team searched for the infant.
