Banks told to serve manufacturers
Shang Fulin, chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, has warned that banks should prevent financial innovation that does not cater to real demands of manufacturers and service providers. "Banks should be wary of self-circulation of capital and arbitrage behavior against regulations to make sure credit funds flow into the real economy," he said in a statement published on the official website of CBRC on Monday.
Assaulted doctors to receive financial aid
The Chinese Medical Doctor Association has set up a fund to help doctors assaulted by patients, Beijing Times reported on Monday. It will invest 10 million yuan ($1.63 million) into the fund every year for the next five years. Doctors who have been assaulted by patients and are financially challenged can apply for grants from the fund to support themselves in medical treatment and living expenses and to hire lawyers to sue the assaulter.
First National Low Carbon Day marked
Monday marked China's first National Low Carbon Day. Xie Zhenhua, the country's top climate change official, said, "Speeding up low-carbon development is the only way to alleviate the shortage of domestic resources and the grim situation of environmental pollution, and to achieve sustainable development." The State Council decided to establish National Low Carbon Day on the third day of the National Energy Conservation Promotion Week this month to popularize knowledge about climate change, promote the concept of low-carbon development and encourage public participation.
Shaanxi
Sewage supervision plan launched
The provincial environment watchdog will supervise sewage treatment plants in Shaanxi province, China Daily learned on Monday. A recent inspection found that 57 out of the province's 105 sewage treatment plants failed to meet standards and the polluted water was sent directly to rivers in some counties.
Gansu
Excavator driver buried in collapse
At least one person was buried in the rubble of a collapsed building in Gansu province on Monday. The building collapsed at about 9:50 am in Chengguan, Zhuoni county, said firefighting authorities in the Tibet autonomous prefecture of Gannan, which administers the county. An excavator driver was buried under the debris, but rescuers had still to determine if more people were buried.
Fujian
Humanitarian aid exercises held
Red Cross staff members and volunteers from both sides of the Taiwan Straits carried out joint humanitarian aid exercises in Jinmen and Penghu, Fujian province, on Monday. The Red Cross Society of China is co-sponsoring the exercises with Red Cross agencies in Taiwan. They are aimed at improving cooperation in natural disaster relief, search and rescue operations and lifesaving efforts.
Yunnan
Police nab 7 in drug trafficking ring
Border police in Yunnan province confiscated 174 kg of heroin and arrested seven people, including three from Myanmar, on suspicion of participation in a drug trafficking ring, according to the public security and border defense team of the Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture. Two suspects were arrested in August after authorities received tips from residents. Five more were detained on May 30.
Shanghai
High-end hospital to cater to tourists
A high-end medical center targeting international tourists will open in Shanghai, Jiefang Daily reported. The Shanghai International Medical Center, the city's first private general hospital, will open for business in November. The hospital will be located near Shanghai Disneyland Park, which is being built, in an attempt to attract more tourists to seek medical service.
Zhejiang
Runaway entrepreneur sentenced to 19 years
Zheng Zhuju, the runaway entrepreneur in an illegal fundraising case in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, involving 820 million yuan ($133 million), was sentenced to 19 years in jail at the second hearing, according to the Wenzhou Intermediate People's Court. The case triggered the credit crisis that occurred in Wenzhou of Zhejiang province in 2011.
