A senior official at one of the most prestigious high schools in Shanghai has been removed from his post after a group of men accused him of having conducted "immoral acts on them" when they were students 15 years ago.

Zhang Datong, 64, vice-dean of the No 2 High School Affiliated to East China Normal University who is also a member of Shanghai's top political advisory body, was removed from his post at the school for "behavior violating teacher ethics", according to a statement from the school.

An investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released later, the school said.

Earlier this week, a group of men who are in their thirties made the accusations on the online micro-blogging platform Sina Weibo.

Zhang is a renowned physics teacher and wrote the book Road to Gold Medals. Many of his students have won gold medals since 1991 at the International Physics Olympiad, an annual competition for secondary school students.
