Amazon.com Inc unveiled on Thursday a new version of Kindle Oasis that boasts added waterproofing and a larger display, the most advanced e-book reader in the Kindle family, in a bid to attract high-end Chinese customers.
With a price tag of 2,399 yuan ($364) for 8GB storage in China, the all-new Kindle Oasis is equipped with a 7-inch e-ink screen instead of a 6-inch display. Like the first generation model, the Oasis is just 3.4mm at its thinnest point, but it now offers a more premium aluminum rear.
This is the first Kindle in the product's 10 years of existence to be waterproof. The added IPX8 certification means it can withstand immersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes, so the e-reader can be used in such places as hot tubs, pools and beaches.
The Kindle Oasis also now features support for audible function, which means you can listen to books.
Dave Limp, senior vice-president for Amazon Devices and Services, said the device is most advanced one in the Kindle family and could let users enjoy reading in more scenarios.
Bruce Aitken, vice-president of Amazon China and general manager of Amazon Reading, said China has become the largest market in the world for Kindle, and they also launched tailor-made Kindle Oasis gift packaging for Chinese readers. "We hope to let the readers enjoy the fun of reading and stimulate people's reading enthusiasm."
In April 2016, Amazon launched its top-of-the-line Kindle Oasis to extend its reach to high-end Chinese customers, who not only enjoy reading but also want to read in style.
