Chinese nuclear operation enterprises ordered to improve safety checks

By CAO YIN | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2017-09-01 16:17

Chinese nuclear operation enterprises are ordered to regularly provide physical checks for employees, in a bid to protect their health and safety, according to China's Nuclear Safety Law.

The law has been approved by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, on Friday after the third review. It was discussed by the top lawmakers respectively in November 2016 and April.

In the law, with eight sections, it states nuclear employees should be not only given safety education and training, but regular physical checks, providing them with the sufficient health protection.

The law, aiming to protect the national nuclear safety and prevent people from being harmed by nuclear disasters, also clarifies liabilities of nuclear operators, ordering them to compensate those harmed by nuclear disasters or accidents in line with the national compensation standard.

Meanwhile, nuclear information disclosure has also been highlighted in the law, hoping to enhance the public supervision in this way.

In addition, punishments for nuclear enterprises that disobey the law, such as conducting nuclear business without authorized approval, have been increased.

The law will take effective from Jan 1, 2018.
