China has been supplying fresh food to Hong Kong through an exclusive system since 1962, ensuring an adequate supply of live poultry, vegetables and fish.
There are more than 8,000 certified mainland businesses designated by the government which exclusively produce food for Hong Kong, according to the International Brand Management Center of the China Association of International Trade.
Faced with an increasing demand for better quality food from consumers on the Chinese mainland, the center is trying to establish a platform which enables those enterprises to supply products to the mainland, according to Xu Jing, director of the center.
"The enterprises will increase production to meet the needs of consumers on the mainland while ensuring an adequate supply to Hong Kong and Macao," he said.
It is expected that more than 300 billion yuan($48 billion) worth of fresh food will be needed in the mainland market annually, according to the center.
The first batch is expected to be sold in markets in Beijing and Jiangmen, Guangdong province, the major supplier of fresh food to Hong Kong, in October.
The food will be available in all major cities in China by 2018, according to the center.
