NEW YORK - At least ten people were injured by a mechanical crane in an accident at a construction site in New York's midtown Manhattan on Sunday, city officials said.
The ten suffered minor injuries and no life-threatening injuries have been reported, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference.
It was fortunate the accident happened at about 11 am during a time of minimal foot traffic in the commercial area. Those injured were mostly pedestrians and construction workers, said de Blasio.
The crane fell at a 30-story commercial building on 38th Street and Madison Avenue after a cable snapped as it was lifting a 4-ton air conditioning unit onto the top of the building, said local media reports.
A spokesman for the Department of Buildings said an investigation into the accident is under way.
