The Third Reich's underground project started in the Sowie Mountains in Poland. Thousands of prisoners of war were worked to death constructing the tunnels. Many prisoners only lasted a couple of months as the German guards worked them 24 hours a day. The site is now a museum that shows the harrowing work done to build these tunnels. As this year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, we list some of the historic sites around the world where the scars and memories of the conflict are still preserved. [Photo/IC] |
