Half people haven't a ticket
A survey conducted by Beijing Times shows that only 100 out of the 203 interviewees who are striving for a train ticket home have managed to secure one during the travel peak between Jan 26 to Lunar New Year's Eve. Those who haven't succeeded have either given up trying, or have resorted to other options such as car sharing, taking a coach or plane. Of the 100 lucky ones, 49 bought their tickets online, 16 got theirs after queuing at the station, 20 purchased theirs at ticket offices, 9 made reservations via phone and 6 had someone else or certain organizations buying for them.
About 50,000 tickets have been returned each day in Beijing recently, according to Liaoning TV. Besides changing their plans, passengers are using multiple channels to buy tickets at the same time, which also leads to the refunds.
