June is a busy time for farmers in Sanmenxia, Henan province, as the wheat ripens and is ready to be harvested.

As of June 12, 1.1 million mu (73,333.3 hectares) of wheat has been harvested, accounting for 93 percent of the total wheat planted, according to the Sanmenxia Bureau of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry.

Sanmenxia's farmers planted approximately 1.174 million mu of wheat this year, an increase of 1.62 million mu compared to last year. Wheat production will see a steady climb due to ample rainfall, and the total output this year is expected to exceed 350,000 tons.

"Last year the wheat planting was delayed two weeks past the optimal period. However, an increase in rainfall has been distributed evenly in the key stages of wheat growth, and the moist soil is bringing the crops along nicely", said a manager at the local agrotechnical station.

The low temperature and lack of hot and dry wind during the grouting period also contributed to the strong growth this year.

"Some alpine regions, such as Lushi and Shanzhou, have not yet begun harvesting. It will still be several days before the harvest season concludes," added the manager.
