Cultural week draws spectators

The Folk Art Festival in Deyang, Sichuan province has impressed many visitors with a vast display of China's rich cultural heritage.

Festival spectator Zou Mo went to the festival on Wednesday, which is part of the Dragon Boat Culture Week, and said he was very impressed with the hand-painted fans on display.

Cultural week draws spectators 

Visitors learn about production techniques of hand-painted fans in Deyang, Sichuan province, on Wednesday. 

"The traditional Chinese paintings of flowers, birds and court ladies are so beautiful that they remind visitors of the good old days," said the 69-year-old tourist from East China's Shandong province.

The festival is showcasing the city's time-honored Spring Festival pictures in Mianzhu and production techniques of its ancient-style, hand-painted fans and fine dried noodles in Zhongjiang,

Sponsored by the city government, the five-day event kicked off on Tuesday with a dragon boat race and the water sports performances by members of China Stunt Water-Skiing Team on the Jinghu River which drew cheers from spectators.

"The dragon boat race and performances of the water-skiing team will be held every day during the dragon boat cultural week," said deputy mayor Lu Ye.

"The last time residents of Deyang saw the dragon boat race was 20 years ago, the current event has drawn people from far and near," said Wu Jin, a middle-aged farmer in the city's suburbs.

While the race and performances provide a visual feast for the general public, an investment promotion fair has attracted 160 businessmen from different parts of the country.

"Contracts for 26 projects in new materials, new energy and the service sector have been signed, with the total investment surpassing 13 billion yuan," said mayor Chen Xinyou.
