Bancheng Spirits was awarded by UN DEVNET General Director Daniel Barriona a UN millennium gold medal at DEVNET Pavilion Monday (Oct 25) for its contributions to the UN millennium development goals.

Chengde city in Hebei province, where Chengde Qianlongzui Liquor Co Ltd, the producer of Bancheng Spirits, is located, held a theme day at the pavilion to celebrate the award the company won.

"The favourable business environment the city has created lays a foundation for the development of the spirits and the award the company has won will bring about great honour to the city's further development," said Chengde Vice Mayor Jia Yuying.

Her words were echoed by Barriona, who spoke highly of what the city has done for the UN goals which were set on September 8, 2000 in New York.

The distillery with a history of more than 230 years has been listed as one of China's top 50 spirits producers. It turns out more than 20,000 tons of spirits annually with China as its major market, said Miao Ruhuan, chairman and president of the company.

The company has invested 300 million yuan in building a new production base to increase its annual sales from 800 million yuan in 2009 to 1 billion yuan this year, said Miao.

As a liquor enterprise with assets of more than 500 million yuan, it is public-spirited to donate combined funds of more than 200 million yuan to disaster-suffering areas as well as 300 students for their study, he said.

"The award is a stimulus to what we have done in the past years and will encourage us to do more for the society in the future," Miao said.
