Local congress rejects appeal to fire deputy

A district people's congress in Zhejiang province negated on Thursday a joint petition from local residents to remove a deputy from his post, saying the appeal is "not valid".

Zhao Zhiyi, deputy to Hangzhou's Xiacheng District People's Congress, has been under call to be removed from his post for illegally grabbing and demolishing private properties, according to a joint petition submitted by 64 residents to the standing committee of the local people's congress on Tuesday.

Zhu Jie, a publicity official from the congress, responded on Thursday that the joint appeal is not valid because some of the petitioners are not from the same electoral district of the deputy and therefore the appeal would not be considered for further public voting.
