Bangladesh foreign Minister Dipu Moni on Saturday expressed her firm conviction in road and rail links being established between Chittagong and Kunming, to boost trade and investment between China and Bangladesh.

"I believe the leaders of Yunnan province can play an important role in establishing the road and rail links," said the foreign minister,

She said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit would strengthen the friendly relations between the two peoples in general.

Kunming is the key transportation hub in Southwest China, with a rail link to Vietnam, and road links to Laos and Burma. The proposed road connecting Kunming and Chittagong would probably link with the road running from Myanmar to other Chinese cities.

Once it is established, Bangladesh would in theory be connected by road to almost all of the important ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) regional bloc's lucrative markets, which include Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. Dipu Moni told China Daily on Wednesday.
