A shelter for abandoned infants, the first of its kind in China, was set up in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, on June 1, 2011. Called "Infants safe island" and equipped with an incubator and alarm, the shelter is open every day and staffed by workers who check it every two hours throughout the night to ensure the safety of abandoned infants.
