Games will be successful

At a press conference after the March 14 riots in Lhasa, Premier Wen Jiabao said that China's wish to host a great Olympic Games is sincere; the Chinese people will face the world smiling and the world will no doubt feel the nation's passion. His words fully demonstrate China's confidence in hosting a successful Olympic Games despite attempts to sabotage the historical event by a small group of people seeking "Tibet independence" and their politically-biased supporters, says Lau See-lo, a political commentator, in the Hong Kong-based newspaper Wen Wei Po. The following is an excerpt:

It has been the overwhelming opinion of the world community to detach the Olympic movement from politics since the Cold War era, when the two superpowers boycotted each other's Games (the Soviet Union in 1980 and the United States in 1984).

Some Western powers, however, apparently miss those years of hostility. A few European leaders are threatening to stay away from the Beijing Olympiad opening ceremony while voicing not a single word of condemnation of the blatant assaults on the Olympic torch relay, this seems a twisted logic.
