Sniffer dog finds fugitive in crowd

Around China

A fugitive, surnamed Yang, was recently detained after his scent was recognized in a crowd by a police sniffer dog in Wuding county. Yang, who was put on a police wanted list in connection with several thefts in March, seldom visited internet cafes or used a mobile phone, making it difficult for police to track him down. Police had previously obtained an item of Yang's clothing, which they let the dog sniff in the hope it would recognize his scent at a later date.

Poppy powder used in noodle dishes

Four people, including the owners of a noodle restaurant and a dried goods store, were recently detained for drug-related offenses in Zhenjiang. The case began when a school bus driver, surnamed Wang, tested positive for drugs during a urine test as part of a routine health checkup in February. Wang, who denied having ever taken drugs, said he often had breakfast at a local noodle restaurant. After investigating for more than two months, police detained the two owners of the restaurant for adding poppy powder to their noodle dishes to get customers addicted to their food. Another two people from a nearby dried goods store were detained soon after for selling the powder to the restaurant.

Drunken driver says no to paying toll fee

A man faces having his driver's license revoked and being placed in a detention house as punishment for refusing to pay a 10 yuan ($1.50) road toll fee and then being found to be over the legal alcohol limit in Jiangdu on May 2. When the driver arrived at the Jiulong highway toll station, he refused to pay the toll fee, saying he lived in a nearby village. According to regulations, villagers living near the toll station do not have to pay the fee when using the highway. But the driver failed to present his identity card and driver's license, leading the station workers to seek help from police, who breathalyzed the man when they arrived at the scene.
