Military parades to mark Victory Day

Russia will hold military parades in 28 cities to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War on May 9, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday. Victory Day celebrations will be held in more than 400 cities across Russia. Shoigu said more than 140,000 servicemen will take part in these festivities, and about 2,000 items of weapons and military equipment, 149 aircraft, as well as ships and submarines, will be involved.

Drug lord Lopez Nunez arrested

Damaso Lopez Nunez, one of the leaders of an international drug trafficking cartel, was arrested on Tuesday in Mexico City, the country's prosecutor-general said on Tuesday. At a news conference, Omar Hamid said that Lopez Nunez was captured in a residential building. The operation took place without any violence or guns being fired.

50 miners trapped after explosion

More than 50 miners were trapped after a huge explosion in a coal mine on Wednesday, state media reported. The reports said more than a dozen injured people had been transferred to hospital after the blast in the Zemestanyurt coal mine in Golestan province. State news agency IRNA quoted a local official as saying some of the trapped miners may have died in the explosion. A rescue operation was under way.

Half of US adults pay for news

Slightly more than half of all US adults pay for news in some form and roughly half of those subscribe newspapers, a new study found. And contrary to the idea that young people will not pay for news because information on the internet is free, nearly 4 in 10 adults under 35 are paying for news, a recent study said. The study also showed about two in 10 of those who don't pay for news now say they are inclined to begin to pay in the future.

Man arrested over flight brawl

Police have arrested a drunken US citizen over a punch-up with another passenger on an All Nippon Airways flight, which caused a delay, officers said on Wednesday. The man, whose name has not been released, was pulled off the Boeing 777 that was due to fly from Tokyo to Los Angeles, after the brawl erupted before takeoff. "I will kill you!" the male passenger, wearing a red Hawaiian shirt, is seen yelling in a video footage.

Fit fathers produce healthier children

Fit fathers could be boosting the mental health of their unborn children, said a research released on Wednesday. The study found that physically active male mice had male offspring that were better at coping with fear. Furthermore, male mice which were stressed before conception were more likely to produce anxious and depressed children.
