The Shenzhen-based genetic sequencing firm BGI signed a cooperation contract with Urumqi High-tech Industrial Development Zone on April 16 to launch a genetic project in the zone.
The construction of the project will include a series of genetic research and development centers, including a genetic museum, BGI’s innovation center, reagent production center, genetic testing center, and biology information technology center.
The project aims to help Urumqi High-tech Industrial Development Zone build itself into the most professional and comprehensive inspection and certification service platform for the genetic industry along the Belt and Road Initiative.
Yang Shuang, the chief operating officer of BGI, said that the company is devoted to providing benefits for people through genetic science technologies and he hopes the cooperation with Urumqi high-tech zone can benefit people in Xinjiang through projects on medicine, agriculture, and expert testimony.
China’s genetic sequencing market, one of the most important aspects of the industry, has become the largest in the world with an annual growth rate of above 20 percent in 2016, according to research firm iResearch Consulting Group.
