The government of Shanxi province has started providing nurse training courses for impoverished residents to improve their vocational skills and with the aim of increasing employment in rural areas.

Shanxi's aging population means there is an increased demand for carers in the province to help meet the demands of elderly residents.

In a bid to meet demand and alleviate poverty at the same time, the provincial government has developed a nurse training plan for 100,000 carers with the aim of lifting over 100,000 families out of poverty.

Lvliang, a city in midwest Shanxi, trained 10,474 carers last year, with 4,298 of them finding employment. The net income of those who work in Taiyuan, capital of the province, generally exceeds 3,000 yuan ($435.3).
