A gala to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Chinese Red Army's victory of the Long March (1934-1936) was held at the Oriental Art Center in Pudong New Area of Shanghai on Aug 29.

The gala staged an artistic interpretation of the Long March through chorus performances, singing, dancing, and dramas, providing the audience with an audio and visual feast.

The event marked the opening of this year's Pudong Culture and Art Festival, where a total of 512 activities will be held in the following two months.

The event is co-organized by the people's government and publicity department of Pudong. Since its initiation in 2011, the festival has remained popular among locals.

According to a local official, the event provides residents and workers in Lujiazui and further afield with a chance to experience theater and the dramatic arts. The official said he hoped that Pudong might become a national demonstration area for culture in the future.
