Performers from Italy's world-famous Teatro all Scalla opera house will take to the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center stage on Sept 3, to perform the works of some of history's greatest composers.

As a precursor to the two-day theatrical omnibus, Lujiazui, a financial hub in Pudong New Area of Shanghai, put on a multimedia art appreciation event on Aug 12, attracting an audience of more than 300.

The host of the event introduced the history and distinct features of the opera house and unveiled how it has become a holy land for classical music.

Inaugurated in Milan in 1778, Teatro Alla Scala is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world. Most of Italy's greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from around the world, have appeared at the theatre during its 200 year history.

Its debut at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center in September is part the local authorities' move to provide world-leading art performances to people of the city. The theater will stage four shows, including Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Simon Boccanegra", Ludwig von Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Bach's "Solo Suites for Cello", and the famous ballet "Giselle".

In addition, Pudong authorities are also working on building a new opera house, aimed at bringing citizens more first-class arts performances.
