Yantai embraces "blue economy"
2009-08-14

The first draft of the “Guideline for Building Yantai Blue Economic Zone” has been released for public comments, according the municipal development and reform committee.

Yantai counties and districts have already begun intensive planning to speed up the development of the local economy. New industries, such as coastal tourism, electrical power and modern chemical engineering, are being planned in Laizhou County. The High and New Technology Industrial Development Zone in Longkou County just signed contracts with the China National Packaging Import & Export Corporation and the China Machinery Research Institute respectively to settle two high-end projects.

As Shandong peninsula’s blue economic zone development strategy takes shape, the city has embraced a great opportunity. “From the construction of Oceanic Yantai to dipping in the new economic zone, it has displayed a more colorful blueprint,” said an official with the municipal development and reform committee.

“Any good plan has to be pulled off only though practice,” said Sun Yongchun, Secretary of Yantai municipal party committee. “We must act quickly to take the advantage of the opportunity and gain the initiative.”

By the first half of the year Yantai’s marine economic products have totaled 51.6 billion yuan, a 15.1 percentage increase over the same period of last year. The main business income of port industries came to 198 billion yuan, a 13.5 percentage increase over last year.
