Zaozhuang is a resource type city. Nowadays, more than 20 kinds of underground mineral resources have been proved up including coal, iron, copper, bauxite, gypsum, lime, granite, quartz sandstone, dolostone, diopside, hard clay and son, of which the storage amount of limestone reaches 26.5 billion tons. It has more than one thousand construction materials and nonmetal production enterprises, including 44 kinds of products and more than 120 varieties, of which cement production capacity is 16 million tons, ranking the first in Shandong province; gypsum production capacity ranks the first in Shandong province and comprises 1/6 of national production amount. In addition, Zaozhuang has abundant water resource and annual average rainfall amount of 815.8 millimeters, which is one of abundant water zones in Shandong province.

Zaozhuang has an excellent geographic location and convenient traffic. Within a radius of 50 kilometers, there are four airports of Xuzhou, Lianyungang, Jining, Linyi, and three seaports of Shijiu, Lanshan, and Lianyungang. Its highway density is 35.7 kilometers per square kilometer. The whole railway in its region has a length of 288.5 kilometers. The world-famous Jing-Hang Grand Canal flows through the south of city and connect such provinces and municipality as Jiangsu, Anhui, Shanghai, Zhejiang and so on. A large amount of high quality coal, cement, gypsum and so on is transported to various places every year. In its administered region, a synthetic transportation network has been formed by aviation, railway, highway, boats and so on.

The whole municipal GDP has reached 109.283 billion yuan in 2008, which increases 13.1% year on year. The GDP per capita has reached 30 thousand yuan. The city’s industrial added value of enterprises above designated size is 59.465 billion yuan, with an increase of 16.3%. Total investment in fixed assets is 49.948 billion yuan, with an increase of 25.7%. Accomplished total foreign trade import and export value is 668.81 million US dollars, with an increase of 4.1% year on year.
