According to the China Association for Science, Hu Shuhe, a student from the Affiliated High School of Jilin University, was invited by the Nobel Foundation and the Swedish Federation of Young Scientists as the only Chinese student representative to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony on Dec 12 this year and the International Youth Science Seminar (SIYSS) in Stockholm, Sweden.
Hu will attend the Nobel Prize ceremony, reception, celebration and lectures provided by Nobel Prize winners and visit renowned Swedish scientific and research institutions. The weeklong event hosted by SIYSS serves as a great platform for the 25 young international scientists, Nobel Prize winners, and local youth to report on their ideas and research progress.
Under the joint efforts of the Nobel Foundation and the Swedish Federation of Young Scientists in 1976, the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar was established in 1976 as a worldwide scientific event for teenagers. Twenty-five students from different countries will be invited every year to be part of the seminar. Since 2008, Chinese students can also get the chance to attend, but only one student from senior high schools with remarkable achievements in international or national youth science competitions will be invited.
Hu Shuhe's physics project titled Preparation of Nano-TiO2-coated graphite carbon composite material and its application in terms of photocatalytics had won the gold medal at the China Adolescents Science & Technology Innovation Contest in Aug 2013, with the boy himself hailed as the "Most Talented Youth". The project also won the gold medal at the Little Scientists of Tomorrow Contest in Dec 2013. Taking his project, Hu also participated in the 26th European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Warsaw, Poland, on Sept 2014. Early this year, he received the Science & Technology Award of Jilin Province.
