After years of pushing forward with its green transport agenda, Wuxi has become the first city in Jiangsu province to be hailed a "Green Transport City" by the Ministry of Transportation.
Lauded along with other cities, such as Beijing, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Xiamen and Wuhan, Wuxi has made significant strides in not only green, but intelligent and convenient transportation.
Wuxi resident Chen Nina said that she refers to her Wuxi Intelligent Bus app every morning before she leaves for work to check the whereabouts her bus is along its route. When she sees that the bus is two stops away she leaves her house.
The app, which covers some 3,000 bus stops and 274 routes in the city, receives up to four million clicks a day.
According to the local traffic authority, annual emissions of carbon dioxide have fallen by 41,000 tons since Wuxi started striving for low-carbon transportation in 2010. Since that year, the city has also attracted 1.76 billion yuan ($265.2 million) in social investment.
Fifty pure electric buses are expected to hit the road this year, said a local official, adding that the first 10 will come into service next month as well as more than 60 charging stations being installed.
