Construction of a sea water desalination plant began in Pingtan, an island city in eastern Fujian province, on Aug 15.

The 450-million-yuan project will be capable of providing 50,000 tons of fresh water per day after its completion in two years, said Wang Hai, general manager of a local ocean energy technology company.
