Pingnan county in East China's Fujian province is making strides in developing its old town districts.

The Pingnan government set up 24 major projects and 18 infrastructure projects, including building new expressways and walkways, and reconstructing hospitals, primary schools and kindergartens.

In addition, seven projects, which emphasized historical relic preservation, traditional village development, and governmental financing, have been mapped out by the local authorities.

Reconstruction of Pingnan Shiyan Primary School, one of the 24 major projects, reached an end in the autumn. Some 900 students in the 5th and 6th grades have already moved from dilapidated school buildings to new classrooms.

The old town development projects, mostly nearing completion, aim to enhance the quality of people’s lives in Pingnan and boost local economic and social development.

Pingnan is expected to reach 4.36 billion yuan ($710 million) in regional GDP, a 10.5 per cent increase, and a rise in its fiscal revenue of 14.2 percent to 262 million yuan in the first ten months of 2014.
