Disney rights protection key task for local govt

IP protection for Disney is one of the major tasks for the Shanghai government this year, according to a recent news conference, and a comprehensive law enforcement team for the intellectual property of Disney will be set up this month that will include the police and the cultural, IP and market supervision authorities. Small commodity markets, major tourist attractions, transportation hubs and hotels will be the areas under focus.

SIPO, Peru to cooperate on patent examinations

The State Intellectual Property Office has signed a cooperation agreement with Peru's National Institute for the Defense of Free Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property about patent examinations, making Peru the first user of SIPO's cloud patent examination system in South America. The two administrations started cooperation in 2012 and initiated a joint training program last year.

China to establish brand value assessments

Liu Junchen, deputy director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, announced last week that China will establish an official brand value assessment system that will be "the most authoritative and impartial". The China Brand Research Institute, jointly set up by Renmin University of China and the China Trademark Association, will be responsible for compiling the system. An evaluation result is due to launch by the end of this year.

City's 5-year plan calls for regional coordination

The intellectual property office of Tianjin unveiled plans for the coming five years that call for regional coordination. According to the plans, the office will share resources and information with its Beijing and Hebei counterparts. They will together build patent information analysis and pre-warning mechanisms. An alliance will be established for companies in the region, providing services for their overseas development.

Provincial fund will support companies going global

Hunan will establish an IP fund for key industries this year, with total planned capital of 500 million yuan ($76.2 million), according to a provincial IP working conference held on Feb 24. The fund aims to support local companies in fields of rail transportation equipment and engineering machinery to carry out overseas patent layout and operations.

Zhejiang

Regional college ranks first for inventions in 2015

Zhejiang University was granted 1,865 invention patents last year, topping all Chinese universities, according to a list recently unveiled by the Ministry of Education. Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University were the top three in the number of valid invention patents by the end of 2015. Zhejiang University has established a department to commercialize its technical innovations.

Police busts makers of fake coconut water brand

Hainan police announced they had cracked down on two companies producing and selling fake coconut beverages labeled as the nationally famous Yedao brand. The police started investigating the case in November last year. They seized more than 2,800 cases of counterfeit drinks at a warehouse in Hunan province and shut down a production plant in Guangdong province. Two main suspects from the companies were arrested.
