China's first baby bottle safety standards were released on April 2, providing specific requirements for labels and warnings. In line with international common practice, the new regulation has taken into consideration safety indexes in the European Union, the United States and Japan. About 100 million baby bottles are sold in China each year, made by some 200 companies, according to industry data.

New well-known trademarks

Taizhou city recently added seven national well-known trademarks. The increase ranked second in the province. All used in the equipment manufacturing industry, those marks range from car brakes and gears to industrial vacuum cleaners and fire extinguishers. Local officials said the rising status of the trademarks indicates the city's traditional manufacturing is transforming toward a higher, more internationalized level.

IP census and database

The industry and commerce administration of the Binhai New Area recently launched a census of trademarks in the area. The program will last five months and cover 16,000 local companies that have more than 21,000 trademarks. The administration will collect information and correct problems found in the use of trademarks and will build a database with the information.

Intellectual property pilot

Yibin city was recently approved as a national pilot city of IP, bringing the total number in the province to nine. City mayor Xu Jin said the government considers IP development one of the key elements to the city's economic growth and industrial restructuring. By the end of 2013, the city had some 7,000 patents, including more than 320 intention patents. Nearly 500 patents have been commercialized since 2009, generating 41 billion yuan ($6.6 billion) of sales volume.

World Cup campaign

Hangzhou customs and the IP authority, police and customs in Yiwu recently launched an IP publicity event about the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil. It attracted many businessmen from the Yiwu small commodities market along with representatives of foreign soccer clubs and sporting goods makers. The event was part of a two-month campaign fighting IP infringement related to the World Cup.

The government of Dongguan issued guidelines last week calling for more efforts to build an innovation-driven city. IP indicators will be part of the performance evaluation system for government officials at all levels, and a related review and appraisal system for major economic events and investment projects will be established. The city government also decided to provide more financial support to patent commercialization and encourage IP agencies to build partnership with more overseas IP trading institutions.

A household electric appliance store in Shihezi city was recently fined 10,000 yuan for unauthorized use for the brand name Gree. The storeowner surnamed Shen purchased a shipment of Gelie-branded stove hoods from Shenzhen, Guangdong province, but claimed in advertising and on labels that they were produced by well-known appliance maker Gree, said local officials.
