Microsoft teams with Tsinghua

Microsoft and Tsinghua University recently established a research center for innovation and intellectual property that will focus on research into the patent system, software copyright protection, innovation policies and IP litigation procedures. Chen Shi, an IP director at Microsoft China, said "it will play an important role in encouraging innovation".

Low-floor tram to Turkey

A proprietary low-floor tram made by CNR Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co was recently shipped to Samsun, Turkey, the first 100 percent locally made low-floor light rail vehicle to be exported by a Chinese manufacturer. Forty meters long, the tram has a maximum speed of 70 kilometers an hour.

An international intellectual property forum recently kicked off in Hubei's capital Wuhan. A group of overseas IP experts from the United States, Germany, South Korea and Japan delivered keynote speeches under the theme of "the relationship of IP protection and strategic emerging industry development". The annual event has been held for 10 years in the city's high-tech industrial zone also known as "China's optical valley".

First 3D printing center

China's first 3D printing center was recently established at a science park in Qingdao. According to the center's administrative committee, it will provide tailor-made products using metal, polymers or other materials. Many key components used in the aerospace industry can also be produced at the center.

830,000 faked labels

A couple in Fenyi county were recently arrested for counterfeiting some 830,000 labels bearing famous trademarks at their print shop. At the request of clients, the husband made labels for electronic devices such as flash discs and DVD players, while his wife was responsible for accounting and deliveries. Law enforcement officials said items for 71 faked brands were made at the shop, which generated 450,000 yuan ($73,890) in illegal sales.

Still No 1 in IP capacity

The province keeps to top the nation in comprehensive intellectual property capacity, according to a provincial IP conference last week. Over the first nine months of the year, companies and organizations in Guangdong filed 8,211 international patent applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty, more than half of the national total. The province also has 445 well-known trademarks, enabling it to lead the nation for seven consecutive years.
