It has been nine long months since she was caught snorting coke but only now has Kate Moss finally admitted: "I've been a stupid girl."

After the Mirror exposed her for hoovering up 20 lines in 40 minutes, the catwalk queen eventually issued a statement apologising for the incident.

But now she has spoken candidly of the shame which almost ended her glittering career. "I know I've been really stupid and childish," she admitted. "I mean, I'm still very childish and I always will be. But I am 10,000 times smarter than before."

Kate, 32, has also had to be more selective about her friends. She revealed that since the scandal, she has found it harder to know who to trust. And, though she has dated a string of men this year, including Russell Brand and Anthony Rossomando, she actually confides in gay guys.

"I love my gay friends most, I now know they are the safest."

It was claimed on Tuesday that Kate has been feeling so depressed, she is considering readmitting herself to a rehab clinic.

But she seemed surprisingly together as she chatted about her rollercoaster year at the re-opening of The Bar at London's swish Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday night. Besides sharing Martini cocktails with old pals Kelly Osbourne and Jade Jagger, she also struck up an unlikely friendship with Dame Shirley Bassey.

At one point, giggling Kate hissed at the Welsh diva in a funny voice: "Don't step on my ****ing dress" and ended up leaving with her in her car (complete with a can of Stella).

Kate's antics come as new details emerged about how drugs had wrecked her relationship with rocker Pete Doherty.

In a poem, she reveals that she cried over his addiction to drugs, saying: "You love them more than you love me. So that's why I could cry all day long, that's why I can't breathe."

Kate penned the message earlier this year in his journal, which has been sold to a publisher for £150,000. Also included is a rambling poem by Pete in which he calls himself a "junkie smackhead".

In another extract, he complains that Kate's pal Sadie Frost was "bashing me with her knockers".

It reads: "I asked her not to continue bashing me with her knockers every time she spoke to me. She responded with a deplorable tantrum which induced the outrage: 'I can't help it if my t*ts are bigger than Kate's!'"

Pete adds: "What kind of friends are these?"

In another passage, Pete proposes to Kate and says that he'll quit drugs if she accepts.

"You'll never read this, I suppose - which is handy 'cause I can write it then, even though you're only upstairs.

"Anyway, I love you so much it has estranged me from myself even. To say it on paper is a bit off but marry me and I'll do the crack off if you want."

Thankfully, Kate can put it all behind her next week, when she goes on a girlie holiday to the Maldives with breast friend Sadie and pal Meg Mathews....
