SEOUL - The Republic of Korea's (ROK) defense ministry has asked the education ministry to revise the current guidelines for writing high school history textbooks in an attempt to raise awareness of national security, local reports said Tuesday.
Noting that some textbooks in use fail to mention the phrase" legitimacy of the Republic of Korea," the defense ministry suggested the textbooks shed more light on the legitimacy of the ROK's government, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The ministry also reportedly took issue with the textbooks' criticism of ROK's authoritarian regime and their favorable description of the government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
The defense ministry proposed the textbooks elaborate more on security threats posed by the DPRK and the ROK's military's role in national development and defense, reports said.
