Chief judge arrested for murder

A deputy chief judge of the Zhejiang High People's Court was arrested on Monday for murder and the dismemberment of a corpse, China News Service reported.

The report said Pan Huashan's arrest was approved by Hangzhou Lin'an People's Procuratorate.

According to Pan's reported confession, he invited the victim, surnamed Qian, to his home for lunch on Jan 8. There, the two argued over a lawsuit before Pan killed Qian, cut his corpse into pieces and disposed of them in Lin'an in the provincial capital of Hangzhou.

After the remains were discovered by a farmer nearly three weeks later, Pan was detained by police on July 26.

2 Liaoning

Cop fatally stabbed in broad daylight

A traffic policeman in Dandong city, Liaoning province, was stabbed to death on Saturday on a street in Zhengxing district.

The local police bureau received a call at around 12:12 pm that a policeman had been fatally stabbed.

When the police arrived at the scene, the suspect was standing next to the cop's bleeding body holding two knives.

After failing to persuade the suspect to surrender, the police shot him dead.

Further investigation is under way.

3 Guangdong

240,000 people abusing new drugs

Over 240,000 people in Guangdong province are addicted to new drugs, such as ecstasy and ice, people.com.cn reported on Monday.

The new drugs have replaced the traditional ones, like heroin, in the province. The annual market value of the drugs exceeds 10 billion yuan ($148 million).

In Tangzai village, some 20 young people have died of drug abuse in the past two years.

4 Guizhou

High-level participants at green forum

A two-day Eco-forum on Green Development was held over the weekend in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, to discuss the low-carbon economy.

The Eco-forum Guiyang 2010 is helpful in promoting public awareness of ecological civilization and facilitating long-term scientific social development, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in a statement to the meeting.

The meeting attracted more than 300 high-level participants from home and abroad, including CPPCC Vice-Chairman Zheng Wantong and former chairman Xu Kuangdi, former British prime minister Tony Blair, Richard Charles Levin, president of the University of Yale, and Zhou Qifeng, president of Peking University.

5 Beijing

Chairman Mao's grandson promoted

The only grandson of former leader Mao Zedong has been promoted to the rank of major general in the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the PLA Academy of Military Sciences confirmed on Monday.

Mao Xinyu, 40, is among a few officers from the academy who gained the rank before August 1, the Beijing-based Mirror Evening News reported, citing press officers from the academy.

Mao has served for more than two years as senior colonel and is currently deputy director of the academy's research center on war theory and strategy.

6 Henan

Bridge collapse death toll hits 51

The death toll from a bridge collapse in Henan province has climbed to 51, while 15 people remain missing more than a week later, local government officials said on Monday.

As of Sunday night, rescue workers had retrieved 51 bodies from the Yihe River in Luanchuan county of Luoyang city, as the search for the missing continued, according to Zhou Hongsen, a senior county official.

The bridge over the Yihe River collapsed at around 5 pm on July 24. A survivor said the bridge was packed with people who were watching the flood roll in when it collapsed.
