Venturing beyond Sweden to cover the rest of the world

Wholly-owned by the Olsson family, Stena AB continues to make waves within the global shipping industry.

One of three parent companies within Stena Sphere, the shipping firm has evolved into a diversified conglomerate engaged also in ferry lines, tanker shipping, offshore oil drilling, real estate, recycling and finance. It employs a total of 17,000 workers.

Stena CEO and son of the founder, Dan Sten Olsson, remains focused on ensuring customer satisfaction, improving Stena's financial position and successfully developing its international business.

Stena Line, the largest division of the company and one of the world's largest ferry operators, intends to become "the No. 1 ferry company in the world always as customers' first choice." It currently has 6,000 employees, 18 routes and 38 ferries.

"In a recent survey, 90 percent of Stena Line's passengers said they were 'satisfied' with their experience, while more importantly, 50 percent were 'very satisfied' with their experience on a Stena ferry. We want to continually increase the number of enthusiastic clients in order to create new opportunities and continue to develop our businesses worldwide," Olsson said.

The company chief is also pleased with Stena's current financial position. Undeniably, the company has never been as strong as it is today.

"Sphere's 2008 turnover was approximately $8 billion with ferry lines and shipping continuing to be a profitable business area," he said.

Stena's success has also led to various partnerships worldwide. In China, the company has enjoyed seven years of successful cooperation with China Ocean Shipping Group Company or COSCO.

"Through numerous global partnerships, a customer-focused approach and our financial stability, Stena remains a results-driven company able to add value for clients and contribute to society. We defined early on where we were a leader and ensured we kept that position. And we intend to continue this approach as we steer the company into the future," said Olsson.
