Oasis beats the Beatles in best album poll

LONDON, June 1, 2006 -- Oasis' 1994 debut "Definitely Maybe" was the top vote-getter among 40,000 British music fans asked to name the greatest album of all time.
Finishing second and third in the poll conducted by NME.com and the book, "British Hit Singles," were the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Revolver," the BBC reported Thursday.

Voters were not given a list of albums to choose from and could pick any release in the 50-year history of the Official U.K. Albums Chart, the BBC said.

No. 4 on the list was Radiohead's "OK Computer," followed by Oasis' "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" at No. 5 and Nirvana's "Nevermind" in the No. 6 spot.

The Top 10 was filled out by Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon," The Smiths' "The Queen is Dead" and Radiohead's "The Bend."

"Usually these polls are full of records that people have only just bought because they are freshest in the mind," said "British Hit Singles and Albums" editor David Roberts. "But this poll shows that the truly great albums always have longevity."
