Thailand will open a consulate general in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, after the 2006 Spring Festival, or the Chinese lunar new year.

Sources with the local Foreign Affairs Office said here on Saturday that Thailand will become the third country to set up a consulate general in Nanning. Vietnam and Cambodia opened their consulates general in the city in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

Currently only the Vietnamese Consulate General can handle visa applications, while the Cambodian Consulate General plans to launch the service after the 2006 Spring Festival, which falls in late January, according to the local Foreign Affairs Office.
