Shangcheng district is the core area of Hangzhou, the capital city of East China's Zhejiang province. During the later period of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), when the emperors named Hangzhou the country's capital, the emperor's palace was located in today's Shangcheng district.
The district has long been a center of economic and cultural development and it has six national-level cultural sites.
Today, the district is the nation's first example of smart management and serves as a national model for smart city construction.
