Kissinger, 91, resting after heart surgery in New York

Nobel Peace Prize winner and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger underwent heart surgery at a New York City hospital on Tuesday and was resting comfortably, hospital officials said.

Kissinger, 91, underwent an aortic valve replacement procedure, according to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The hospital declined to provide any other information. A spokeswoman for Kissinger would not comment.

Last year, Kissinger was admitted to the same hospital after a fall in his home. He was released the same day.

The German-born Jewish refugee served as Secretary of State under Republican presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.

After leaving government, Kissinger set up a high-powered consulting firm in New York.

He also has served on corporate boards and various foreign policy and security forums, written books and served as a media commentator on international affairs.
