The dark side of Internet moon

China Daily | Updated: 2009-07-24 07:48

Though the Internet has created a lot of opportunities and opened new avenues for us, it has made life lonely and boring, says an article in Oriental Morning Post. Excerpt:

A posting, "Jia Junpeng, your mother's calling you home for dinner", has become quite popular on the Internet. The fast pace of life in modern society has obscured our memories of the past, when our mothers used to call us back home for a meal while we played with friends outside.

The Internet has become an indispensable part of modern life. We get information and work opportunities, do our shopping and social networking, and play games on the computer, without the need to even step outside our homes. Internet can help people in cities get most of their daily necessities. Some people can afford to eat and sleep less, but cannot live without the Net. There are others who even forget their children or spouses for the lure of the virtual world.

When the famous online game, World of Warcraft, was stopped for more than 40 days to get government approval, many addicted online players spent sleepless nights. They couldn't accept the fact that they were actually very lonely.

That is when the "Jia Junpeng, your mother's calling you " posting drew wide attention. The posting could have been the result of a sudden realization that they had been too lonely and boring in the past.

No one can deny that social progress and technological advancement have given us more choices than before, but it's a pity that they haven't been able to make our life more colorful. Many people idle away their spare time before computer screens, get addicted to games and films on the Net, and feel lonely and lost if they can't log on to a website. Computers and the Internet have made many people fond of home life rather than outdoor activities.

Our psychological dependence on the Net has made us addicted to online life and maimed our ability to develop healthy hobbies. And it has made our life boring and lonely.
