100 tons rice for Obama's grandma

By Xie Yu | China Daily | Updated: 2009-01-21 07:48

Chinese volunteers donated over 100 tons of rice to help Kenyan orphans adopted by US President Barack Obama's grandmother, Sarah Obama, in Beijing yesterday.

Volunteers, including celebrities like Shimeng Qi and Yu Chengsong, along with Beijing-based conglomerate Bright Oceans Corporation, made the donation to help Kenya deal with a severe food crisis.

The donation was organized by Zhao Xiaokai, a campaigner who also runs a website. Zhao said he was moved by the generosity of Sarah Obama, whom he visited in Kenya some time ago. Sarah adopted 82 AIDS orphans on Christmas Eve.
