A tourist-friendly venue

(That's Shanghai)

Chef Deng Huadong's latest venture, Deng G, has taken the space once belonging to Shui Yuan and re-imagined its interior with a gracious, understated palate of rustic earth tones.

The ambiance suited our meal perfectly; we enjoyed unhurried starter courses of Australian scallops (RMB 28 per scallop) and gong bao king prawn balls (RMB 158 per six pieces). Both were superb, though slightly sweeter than expected. Our mains were delightful, the delicate sweet and sour Mandarin fish (RMB 15 per 50g) was very fresh indeed, and the spiced salt and pepper bull frog (RMB 88) particularly pleased our overseas visitors.

Ultimately, this is a tourist-friendly restaurant that still has plenty to offer local residents who don’t mind paying extra for quality fare.
