1969 ¨C a name not so much inspired by the year of Woodstock or the first moon landing, but instead the four lucky numbers of the four owners of this bar, which is tucked away under Shu Di Chuan Shou Sichuan restaurant on Chaowai.

¡°Of course, the number 69 will get anyone excited,¡± jokes manager Simon Wang (formerly of Icehouse and Shanghai¡¯s Three on the Bund) who hopes to attract Beijing¡¯s socialites with an extensive selection of cocktails (RMB 30) and martinis (RMB 40), r&b and breakbeats on the decks and themed nights such as model evenings (when the bar will be filled with pretty ladies, who¡¯ll probably get free drinks) and "red or dead" evenings (red clothes are, once again, rewarded with alcohol ¨C genius). Lavish mirrors complement 1969's carmine theme and crystal-bead curtains section off comfortable private booths. However, the intended laidback lounge atmosphere is somewhat undermined by the violent disco lights that sporadically shoot across the dance area, and music that's perhaps a little too loud for those not trendy enough to qualify for the VIP area. This said, good service and good drinks should make a Friday night visit worthwhile.
