Nan Jie: inexpensive drinks

A tribute to defunct South Bar Street and sporting Huxley's 'shut up and drink' mantra, Nan Jie is an affordable haven for drinkers en route to, or escaping from, more luxurious points.

Despite its name, Nan Jie has almost nothing in common with South Bar Street's hooliganish vibe of yore. The interior isn't too inviting with new black leather sofas and high-backed dark wood chairs. An acute lack of outdoor seating instantly erases this joint from the city's summer lounging list.

What Nan Jie lacks in rebel accoutrements is made up for in inexpensive drinks. Beers are RMB 10-20, liquor and cocktails RMB 10-20, while shooters cost RMB 10 (two-for-one Mondays). The kitchen's pita sandwiches are recommended by the emo college rock-looking barkeep.

Friendly but not as cheap as places like Pure Girl used to be, Nan Jie enjoys an amazing location and will likely benefit from Beijingers' Pre/Post-Gongti Orientation/Disorientation Syndrome.

Location: Opposite the north gate of Worker's Staddium, Gongti Beilu
Opening time: 5pm-late
Tel: 010-64130963
How to get there: Across from Worker Stadium Northwest corner, alley east of the big parking lot/car wash. Look for a green sign.
