The recession is not entirely a bad thing for Beijing diners because restaurants are lowering their prices. Even the KFC is doing special discounts on set meals. So why not celebrate the New Year at a good restaurant at a reasonable price, and get closer to your loved ones.

Barolo Restaurant at The Ritz Carlton Beijing is one of the best Italian Restaurants in town. It offers five delectable courses from the Piedmont region for New Year's Eve at 888 yuan per person, or 1,088 yuan per person with selected wines matched to each course. The Ritz's Carlton's bar will be jumping all night.

For a decent Chinese dinner visit Huang Ting at the Peninsula Beijing, where one can eat eight courses of Cantonese dishes, to a background of Chinese folk music, in a traditional courtyard house decoration. Set meal costs 588 yuan per person, and 288 yuan for children.

China World Hotel organizes a buffet dinner and show at its 1st floor conference hall, where people can watch a show of singing, dancing and conjuring tricks, in addition to a lucky draw. Seats are still available at 1,888 yuan per person, or 2,088 yuan.

The LAN Club has a great restaurant and afterwards you can check out the masquerade party, which starts at 9pm and runs until late. Soul Central, which earned itself global recognition as one of the world's most dynamic DJ teams, will perform at LAN. No doubt they will play their top-10 hit single Strings of Life, and number one hit single Put Your Hands Up For Detroit. Entry costs 100 yuan.

To get a taste of local flavor try Ken de Rouge on the west bank of Houhai Lake, offering three banquets, each featuring 14 courses, besides soup and dessert.

Or, visit the newly opened Lord of Salt at Nanxincang, where owner Huang Ke has put an arty and gourmet spirit together for spicy and tasty Sichuan cuisine. Wherever you dine, BJW wishes you a happy New Year!
