South China province elects top lawmaker, governor

HAIKOU — Liu Cigui, who became Party chief of Hainan in April, was elected Friday as director of the standing committee of the Provincial People's Congress.

He was elected at the sixth session of the fifth provincial People's Congress, the local legislative body.

Born in 1955, Liu is a native of Quanzhou in East China's Fujian province. He is a former head of the State Oceanic Administration, and was transferred to Hainan in December 2014 to serve as deputy secretary of Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

At the same session Friday, Shen Xiaoming was elected governor of the island province.

Shen was born in 1963. He once served as vice mayor of Shanghai and vice education minister before he was transferred to Hainan as deputy Party head of the province in March 2017.
