Legislators told to cage power with law

BEIJING - China's top legislature has been told to strengthen the supervision and restriction of officials' power with a comprehensive legal system and effective law enforcement.

The comment was in a statement released on Thursday, after a Wednesday meeting held by leading Party officials with the country's Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).

Presided over by Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, the meeting was held after President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed zero tolerance of graft and promised to seriously punish every corrupt official caught.

According to the statement, Party members should stick to strict self-management, follow a system of prevention and punishment, and set an example in correcting questionable behavior.

The statement urged Party members and organizations at all levels in the NPC system to strengthen their political awareness, abide by various disciplines and voluntarily subject themselves to public scrutiny.

While told to "put power into the cage of regulations," legislators were also urged to make more efforts to serve the people and fulfil their duties to safeguard the authority of the law.
