Charity program finances a musical dream for children
Thanks to an art charity program, three talented children from low-income families in Shenzhen can study at Lang Lang Music World.
This is a top piano training school founded by star pianist Lang Lang.
Initiated by both Shenzhen Langham Hotel and Shenzhen Charity Federation's Handpicked Charity Foundation, the program will finance children from less well-off families to pursue their musical dream.
"Our goal through this program is not to develop professional musicians, but to open a window to a brighter world for those less fortunate children and to let them see the infinite possibilities of life," said Sven Isberg, general manager of Shenzhen Langham Hotel.
The program received 39 applications in a month. After strict verification, including visits to their homes, the sponsors also carried out interviews to see for themselves the dedication and talent of the hopefuls.
Finally, three children were given a scholarship of 85,232 yuan ($13,800) for a year's study at the school.
Ten-year-old Zhao Feidong lives with his mother, who delivers fast food for a living.
The families of two girls, 10-year-old Lu Qing and 9-year-old Zhang Xinxin, also work hard to make ends meet.
"We insist on supporting charity," said Lang Lang before issuing the entrance certificates to the children on Tuesday night.
"We will provide more opportunities for children who love playing piano."
The sponsors said they would review the program in a year.
