UNITED NATIONS - UN Secretary-general Ban Ki- moon on Thursday sent a message to the Chinese people, wishing them a happy new year as the traditional Chinese Spring Festival draws near.
At the beginning of the video message, Ban introduced himself in Mandarin Chinese.
"I am pleased to send my warmest greetings for the Lunar New Year," he said. "In this Year of the Snake, let us work together in harmony for peace, prosperity and a healthy planet. Happy New Year!"
Ban also said in Mandarin Chinese "Guo Nian Hao" and "Chun Jie Kuai Le," both meaning "Happy New Year" in Chinese.
The Spring Festival, or China's Lunar New Year, falls on Sunday, February 10 this year. It is the most important Chinese traditional holiday, highlighting family reunions and renewal of seasons.
