China hopes G20 summit buoys Europe's confidence

BEIJING - The upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, should buoy the European countries' confidence in restoring economic and financial stability, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Wednesday in Beijing.

Spokesman Liu Weimin made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a question on whether China supports the G20 summit to discuss issues concerning the Greek debt crisis and Greece's exit from the Eurozone.

Liu said that as a major platform for international economic cooperation, the G20 summit has always focused on major and pressing risks in the global economic and financial sectors.

China suggests the Los Cabos summit take account of the overall global economic recovery situation and support Eurozone countries to take effective measures to overcome their difficulties, he said.

Leaders of the EU and Eurozone countries have repeatedly expressed that they have the determination, capability and resources to resolve the sovereign debt crisis, Liu said, noting that the G20 summit should acknowledge their efforts.

The Greek debt crisis is essentially EU's internal affairs, but if the crisis endangers international economic and financial stability, the international community should pay attention to it and offer help to Greece, said the spokesman.

However, he said whether the summit will discuss the Greek issue should be decided through consultations among G20 member states.
